Tips for writing it

A great thank you note names the thing, then names the effect. “Thank you for the cookbook” is polite; “Thank you for the cookbook — I made the lemon cake on Sunday and my kids asked for it again” shows the gift landed. That second sentence is what the recipient will remember. For help rather than a gift, mention what the help allowed you to do.

Send thank-you notes promptly: within a few days for dinners, favors and small gifts, and within two to three weeks for bigger events like weddings or showers. For work, a quick card after a project wraps up or at a review time is especially appreciated. It’s never too late to thank someone, though — a note months later still says “I haven’t forgotten.”
